A NEW mum was left mortified after a shopping centre staff member told her she needed to breast feed in private.
Shannon Laverty, from Gold Coast, Australia, took to social media to slam the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre for trying to “cancel a breastfeeding mama.”
She hoped to encourage the breastfeeding community to take a stand against the centre in solidarity.
The mother-of-two explained that she sat down to breastfeed her newborn, Shep, in a public lounge area of the centre when a staff member came over and told her there were private facilities available.
Shannon expressed her outrage, saying that the shopping centre had picked on “the wrong community to f*** with.”
She wrote: “To the concierge today, your lucky I’m a stronger mama the second time around.
“Your lucky (that today), I’m not filled with self-doubt as I was with my 1st (child).”
Shannon assured that the concierge was lucky that she was alone at the time.
She said: “You’re also lucky that my village and community wasn’t standing behind me this morning, but oh let me tell you, we are bound, strong, together, as warriors standing our ground, to create the future we believe in.
The mum told ABC the concierge that there was a facility where she could change her baby’s nappy, as well as hot water and milk powder provided so she didn’t need to use her body.
Shannon said: “My jaw just dropped, and I said, ‘I’m fine here’.”
The furious mother implored fellow mothers to stand with her against Pacific Fair, as she had planned a demonstration – encouraging others to join her breastfeeding at the centre.
“She said, ‘Well if you’re not going to use the facility, I’m going to ask you to move on from here because, as you can see, there are stores like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, so you’ll have to breastfeed somewhere else.’”
Pacific Fair offered an apology but maintains that the incident between Shannon and the concierge was a “misinterpretation”, as their policy had always been to allow mothers to breastfeed anywhere in the centre.
A spokesperson for the centre said: ““Unfortunately while a member of staff was attempting to explain the various options available at the centre, there may have been a misinterpretation which caused offence to the customer.
Shannon wrote that she wants to continue to normalise breastfeeding.
She wrote: “Whatever that means.. normalise? Do we really need to continue to ‘normalise’ such a NATURAL occurrence??? Another discussion for another day, absolutely!”
She said such comments could be life-threatening because suicide was the leading cause of maternal death in Australia during pregnancy and the 12 months following birth.
