NOT feeling so chirpy? It may pay to get broody about birds.
They have been a lockdown mood-lifter, with thousands of us taking part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch in January.
Sales of bird feeders almost quadrupled last year, according to OnBuy.com.
But keeping our feathered friends happy needn’t beak the bank . . .
PECK A BARGAIN: Wilko has a great range of cheap and cheerful bird feeders starting from £1. There are all sorts of styles and sizes, to cater to most budgets. I like the Easy Clean Bird Table, £15 — it’s a pretty wooden option that will suit most gardens. Similar options cost £39.99 at Robert Dyas.
WING IT: You could always make your own feeder. There are all sorts of easy designs online, whether you want to get handy with wood or PVC piping.
The easiest and cheapest option I’ve found is a bottle feeder. Simply use an empty, clean water or milk bottle by cutting open the sides (so there are large enough entrance holes), and then poke holes for a thin chopstick perch.
Fill with bird seed and hang. You could even get the kids decorating the bottles.
FEATHER YOUR NEST: If you’ve already got a bird feeder but it’s seen better days, why not spruce it up for spring? A small tester pot of paint should do the trick. A bright pastel shade, such as Cuprinol Garden Dazzling Yellow, £3.45 for a sample pot at Homebase, will save forking out for a full-size pot, £14.
SUPER SEEDS: Be careful what you put in your bird feeder. Avoid salted peanuts, while desiccated coconut can be fatal to birds if not well soaked.
Wilko Wild Bird Seed Mix is £1.50 for 2kg (75p per kg), but buying a larger size could save in the long run — a whopping 12.55kg bag of Happy Little Bird Wild Bird Seed is just £5.29 (approx 42p per kg) at Pets At Home.

SCALLOP-style beds are seriously in style. I love the Stella bed at Next but it’s £499. Aldi.co.uk has an amazing option for £249.99.
